Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar found himself in the midst of a controversy for making an unsavoury comment against Virat Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma following the Indian captain’s failure in Friday’s IPL match.

Sunil Gavaskar’s comments against Virat and Anushka:

Kohli haven’t had a good IPL this season so far. Over the played two matches, he could be seen struggling with his bat. Surprisingly, On Friday, while playing with Kings XI Punjab, one could even see Kohli’s failure on the field. He had dropped two catches of Kings XI skipper K.L.Rahul which helped Rahul make a whopping 132. Thereafter during batting, he managed to make only 1 run out of five balls before getting out. Exactly at that point, Sunil Gavaskar made a distasteful comment against Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma. He reportedly said “Inhone lockdown me to bas Anushka ki gendon ki practice ki hain”. (Virat Kohli has only trained against Anushka’s balls during the lockdown).”

Fans angry on Gavaskar:

Obviously, Sunil Gavaskar’s comment didn’t go down well with Virat Kohli’s fans as well as Anushka Sharma’s fans. Some of them even urged BCCI to expel the legendary cricketer from the commentary panel.

Anushka Lashes out at Sunil Gavaskar:

Even Virat’s wife and bollywood actress Anushka Sharma also didn’t seem to take the former cricketer’s remarks lightly. She took to Instagram and released a statement condemning Gavaskar’s comments as distasteful. She further asked why would she always be dragged into her husband’s professional affairs. Over the years, she has been blamed quite a number of instances for Virat’s poor performance on the field.

Support for Gavaskar:

Meanwhile, there were some who spoke in Gavaskar’s defence and pointed out that his satire was in reference to the friendly cricket match the couple played outside their mumbai residence during lockdown.

Mistake is a Mistake: Better Apologize

But whatever it is, in one way or the other, Gavaskar’s comments were really distasteful, if not sexist. Even if Gavaskar’s comment was not intended to be sexist, but was made only the cricket match being in his thoughts, then also it would come under anti feminist remark. Why should one blame their female counterparts for the failures or mistakes of men.

Moreover, Gavaskar should have restricted his commentary upto the poor performance of RCB skipper without dragging Anushka into the issue. These type of unwanted comments when made by the man of such a stature, they would set a bad example to the society. Hence, Gavaskar is being demanded to apologise for his comments against Virat and Anushka.

Kangana supports Anushka:

Kangana Ranaut, being an ardent supporter of feminsim condemned Gavaskar’s comments against Virat and Anushka but opined that the comments might not have been maliciously intended. On the other hand, Indian Skipper hasn’t responded to the issue yet.
